English Independents

The ears still buzzing from last night's concert of The Wedding Present, I'm going to tell you something about the English independent music scene.

Independent bands are bands which dont sign with great record labels (like EMI, CBS,..), but with small local labels. So they dont have the pressure from the company to produce a record which needs to be sold and be liked by everybody. They can play their music the way THEY like (and even if they are the only ones who like it).

One of the best known English Indie band is The Jesus And Mary Chain. They recently released a new LP called "Automatic". Definetly one of the best records available at the time. Their single "Blues From A Gun" is still fighting in the international charts. The band was founded about six years ago by the two Scottish brothers William and Jim Weird. In 1985 they released a 12" called "You Trip Me Up" on Blanco Y Negro Records. They songs were full of noise effects, you couldn't hardly define the vocals and guitars. Their LP "Psychocandy" was in the same style, but with some really great songs like "Taste Of Cindy". In their next LP "Darklands" the disorted guitars were replaced by acoustic guitars. A great LP with beautiful songs. They also released a live LP and a some kind of "best of"-LP. The Jesus And Mary Chain, a band we going to hear a lot of in the future.

Their are also other great bands like Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine or Happy Mondays who keep experimenting with guitar disortions, and often achieve great results. If you prefer slow romantic music, go hear The House Of Love or Primal Scream.

For fans of fast guitar music, there are bands like Birdland, Senseless Thing or The Wedding Present. (The guitarist of The Wedding Present needs about two new guitar strings for every song.) The Wedding present also released a new LP called "Bizzaro", and are touring through Germany this December. Go see them when they come to your town!

Well, this was this time's excursion away from Pop-synthie- songs to what I consider to be real music played (live) by men. Next time: Oi! Oi! The Skins!
